When it comes to scenario testing under the UK’s Operational Resilience framework, the challenge isn’t just running a test, it’s designing one that’s truly severe, plausible, and meaningful.
This webinar is designed to support individuals who have “portfolio responsibility” for Operational Resilience or are in a dedicated Op Res role but lack experience in designing and running crisis exercises, to explore the four key elements required for a successful test and the common mistakes made in respect of each.
Time – How much time do participants have? This will influence the format of your exercise whether it’s a walk-through, tabletop, simulation or full live scenario.
Scenario – What is a severe but plausible scenario that is both realistic and challenging? It must be relevant to the participants to ensure engagement, but not so complex that it overwhelms them.
Plan – What’s the status of the underlying crisis management and communications plans being tested? Do participants need to be familiar with the business continuity or crisis plan ahead of the session?
Success Criteria – A crisis exercise is all about the process rather than getting the right response in the allocated time and should help participants:
Understand their role during a crisis
Rehearse the implementation of the relevant plans and procedures
Identify any gaps or weaknesses that could undermine a real response and make changes necessary to prevent them de-railing you in the future.
The participants will be shown an example of a SBP crisis simulation storyboard and inputs, that builds out from a cyber incident as the trigger event, to give a practical example of designing a “just right” scenario, then opening into a Q&A session.
Lead Speaker – Robin Hamilton has 15 years’ experience as a designated Police critical incident and firearms commander, including a posting to the FBI Academy. Subsequently seconded to the FCO he was responsible for Diplomatic Security in Greece and the Balkans, before being headhunted into corporate security where he specialised in crisis response.
